Deathwatch: Suffer Not the Xenos to Live

Gabriels veiws on space and Psycers.

After a glorious slaughter of xeno filth in space, we had a moments pause for the teams lady human psycher to visit her powers upon us. Our apothecary had been assigned to another mission and our Watch Captain expressed the psycher strength would be of such power our wounds would heal instantly. I have witness and felt this power of the psycher before, usually with some strange consequence in the area. Though consequences is what follows great power some of the manifestations from the warp she can call have been odd at its best. With that said, she tended to my wound yet not with the full power I have grown accustomed to. It was gentle power, controlled power and when I looked at her with shock she simply stated she wanted to be careful with her powers, did not want any accidents.

WHY! Were in space!

Of all places to hold back power space is not it. I have seen full power used in populated area’s, fragile places and even dangerous places!

I know your thinking space station, space ship, surely not floating around in space, unprotected by ship or field, just freely floating in space?! Yes this is the space I refer to, filled with stars, no air and gravity gone, me her and space!

Gabriel where would you like to fight a demon!? In space! If the psycers head were to exploded into a demon, great! This is where I want to fight him. If she tore a whole in the fabric of reality, awesome! I want to fight them here. There is no better environment then space to face demons. I have air they do not, do they need air? maybe not. They do need gravity and I win there. Hello demon, oh your floating away, growl, growl, growl all you want!. Look at me I can grab you and spin you around. You going to flap your wings evil demon, go ahead you are not going anywhere. Flap and spin in circles. Oh, demon choke on the cold of space. A bloodthirster in space, have you seen anything more funny!?

I have seen her power kill all plant life in an area, there is no plant life in space! Go full power!

I have seen her power make statues cry blood, in space no on will notice. It be like snowflakes and who doesn’t like that. Perfect bloodly snowflakes.

Make the sky black? Well it is already black in space. More Power!!! Make the space station a strange color, well that wont hurt me or it.

SPACE GO FULL POWER!

5475th day of service

Today marks the 5,475th day upon Watch Station Erioch. In what little spare time I have had between tending to the God Emperor’s Angels, performing the rite of purification upon their blessed wargear, and prayer to the God Emperor of MankindI have made become close with 2 of my fellow surfs; Yuri Fythe and Bulgaruk Fouson. Yuri Fythe assumed his duties here about the same time as I did. He is my senior by 38 days. He is somewhat of a prodigy in regards to his ability to sanctify The Angel of Death’s armor, though he would never boast of his talent. Bulgaruk is relatively new having only served for 2,555 days. He hails from a world who’s entire population is honored and solely dedicated to the proper upkeep of His Angel’s blessed wargear. He has trained for this and nothing else his entire life.

Upon the eve of the 5,431st day Yuri Fythe was plucked from his duties by One of the newly honored Astartes, Brother Gabriel of The Blood Angels, Guardian of the Golden Angel, his most esteemed Honor Guard. It was his great fortune to be chosen, personally, by the beautiful Blood Angel. Tales travel far and wide of the nobility, culture, and grace of the most dedicated of Astartes Chapters. I have personally laid eyes upon the sons of Sanguinus and they are indeed angelic, more so then any other I have seen.

At first my friend could not contain his excitement, behind closed doors of course. To touch the armor of a Guardian to Dante himself. It would fulfill a life’s goal. But as the days past my friend seems in more dour spirits. When I asked him why he was no longer in a state of utter elation he had simply shrugged and moved on to daily prayer. Bulgaruk and I were shocked but continued in our duties. We hypothesized that perhaps our friend had made a critical error when tending to his duties that brought shame upon him. Bulgaruk even gave voice stating he would throw himself off the tower of judgement should he fall upon such a failing of duty.

The days moved to weeks and Surf Fythe become more despondent, our words not seeming to even reach him. When I confronted him physically he stated in a soul crushed tone, “I have no time for this, I must deliver this… message to Catrina of Bacunawa squad.” I had become very worried for my friend.

Since the departure of Kill Team Trail Blazer my friend Fythe has started to become his old self again. He has taken to spending his free time in the armories where he would lovingly tend to the machine spirits. This time among the Angel’s armor has truly refreshed his downtrodden spirits. It is good to to have my friend back again.

The 5,474th day marked the return of the Kill Team Trail Blazer. I was with Fythe in the armory enjoying a story when we received word of their victorious arrival. He stopped in mid polish of a breast plate and stared blankly for nearly a minute before falling back into his malaise. He has not been his old self since. Their return has had much more dire circumstances however.

Bulgaruk, who has trained his entire life to become a serf who would serve an Astartes had been trying to draw the attention of any of the Battle Brothers of Kill Team Trail Blazer since their arrival as all other Kill Teams have their rosters fulfilled. Trail Blazer would likely be the last team accepting serfs for our foreseeable lifetime. Meeting the mighty Astartes at the loading dock to anticipate their needs, the team arrived with a stranger. A man from the planet Baraban stationed to the Imperial Guard unit, The Mortessan Highlanders.

It is a serious offense to bring anyone not cleared to this most hidden of stations so it was questioned by the Apothecary seeing to their arrival. When asked the mighty Blood Angel Garbriel, chosen of Dante, and Bearer of the Word of Truth, stated, “Ah, this is, what’s your name? Cromwell. Yes, this is Cromwell, my new helmet bearer!” On the 5,475th day of service here my friend Bulgaruk threw himself off the Tower of Judgment. Today I celebrate my 15th year of service alone.

Gabriel's week as a Vegan.

My mission diet consisted of lichen, and colored lichen. I will state that the plants upon the mission target world where all connected as a giant living force. To die and feed another plant, and grow again stronger. The plants where not hostile, they did not attack other life forms. The plant life had little in the way of defense, no sharp thorns or acidic ichor. The plants strength was simply in its ability to grow again. It could lose a thousand acres of life yet the world would not feel the scar for long.

Combat would come and scar the land yet by the next day all signs where grown over once again. Nature returned its own balance, a world that would not surrender to any ill effect. With great zeal I part took in this foliage, devouring it by the pounds. I could feel the regenerative properties of the plants, yet a plain boring taste.

Nothing I have ever tasted could taste so bland. No amount of spice could repair the dull of the foliage. Even thinking upon the topic of this food has drained me of any enthusiasm. I retire this issue……

In the end, can vegetarians eat animal crackers?

To Inquisitor Hjalmar of the Orodo Hereticus
*LOCATION REDACTED* Report

Authorization….

Greetings Hjalmar,

I am writing to inform you and document my recent entanglement with the heretical cult forces of the Stigmartus and their un-dying leader, Elak Sarda. He has been remitted into the custody of the Deathwatch Black Tower and will be sequestered and interrogated. I have requested to be present to represent the Ordo Hereticus and to ensure that he is properly and safely disposed of in death. He is a significant capture for the sector, though I fear that dismantling his power and disposing of him will be a tricky endeavor.

During our most recent mission, our team encountered resistance from forces of the Stigmartus. They were easily dispatched, to the last man. Upon a final assault on the remnants of their forces in the area, I discovered that Elak Sarda himself was present near the battlefield.

After a valiant battle in which the Marine brothers crushed this last wave, I directed our team to the location of Elak Sarda and his cadre. There were 9 present, potentially observing the battle from afar. He had with him a psyker who in a moment, seemed uncannily aware of my scouting sight. There were also 3 robed figures of slighter stature which may have been adepts or chaotic scholars. The other 4 were armed and armoured as a supposed Elite body guard to Elak Sarda.

They did not evade or resist our ranged assault. I found this to be fortuitous, but then in my infinite paranoia, thought it too easy a blow, especially when I knew that their witch was most likely aware of my presence and knowledge.

Most of his cadre was immediately disposed of and incinerated by the missile barrage let loose by Brother Livii. I saw Elak Sarda sink to his knees and wanted to ensure we were eradicating the correct person. Upon reading his true essence, it was clear to me that this was indeed, none other than Elak Sarda, Commander of the Stigmartus forces. However, in my read I also gleaned a full insight into his emotional energies and primary state. It was one of distinct Triumph.

In horror I realized that my paranoia’s were correct, but in a manner which I had not forseen. I believe that Elak Sarda’s method of undying must incorporate some form of re-birth or reincarnation in a heretical blood sacrifice that might have included the death energies of his various troops sent to easy slaughter and culminating in the sacrifice of himself and his cadre to forces of an enemy. This is all supposition, but all I knew was that letting the heretic die would be giving him his only desire at that moment.

This was not to happen.

With the speed of the Astartus, I was able to be swiftly carried to Elak Sarda. Acting quickly, I kept him from death, bestowing upon him a Miracle of the Emperor’s power. I thought it a fitting tool and blessing to thwart his evil machinations. By the Grace of the Emperor.

He was the only survivor, the rest of his cadre perished. It became apparent that there was a ritual star and circle drawn on the rock face in a large encompassing pattern with the dead cadre and Elak Sarda in the center focal point. The Astartus Kill Team broke the ground upon which this foul symbol was drawn.

Steeling myself, I attempted to interrogate the subject but quickly saw that conventional methods were of no use. I had his eyes and ears punctured to dull his senses while making sure he had no method of ending his life. I ordered him stripped, armour and clothing removed and inspected. The only thing of note was the elaborate scarring and self-mutilations on his body.

In my ritualistic and occult studies, I have become warily familiar with recognizing certain perversions and symbols of warding used by agents of chaos. Some of these patterns were ensconcing his body. He was most likely cognoscente of my nature and abilities by then and I became unable to read his aura and fate further. He was protected and actively resisting me. In my analysis on determining where his power came from, as he is not psychically imbued, it seemed to me that these scars and wardings were a connection to his chaotic and unholy patron(s). As you know, the Stigmartus, as a mass, participate in self-mutilation and ritualistic scarring.

Upon isolating certain symbols of power in his flesh, I drew my blessed blade Atropos and with prayers and psalms to the emperor of cleansing I began to cut and slice away the markings on his flesh. Since I did not want to contribute to the foul mutiliations of his body, I devised a way to counter this, again, using the Emperor’s Grace flowing through me to repair and renew untainted skin beneath the layers of perverted flesh I carved away.

To this effort, I finally found resistance and reaction in Elak Sarda. None of my interrogations and tortures elicited any response other than an uncanny, steady, self-assured smugness.

I believe this was a method to be pursued. Unfortunately, my focus was disrupted and the scarring was recarved by my hand as foul powers broke it’s way through my intentions. His skin is cursed and there is a confirmed power in his scarring.

As this was occurring in the field with other threats still abounding, I was encouraged to put aside my field tests and plans for that moment and submit Elak Sarda into the custody of a trusted Librarian of the Deathwatch to watch over his security until we were able to return him to the Erioch. Once the chain of custody was concluded between the Librarian and myself under the proper jurisdiction and procedures between Inquisitorial authorities, the Kill Team and I returned to complete our original mission. Epistle Eustace, Librarian of the Deathwatch, kept close guard of Elak Sarda and he and I ensured his protected return to authorities on Erioch with no interruption.

He now awaits his fate in Black Tower dungeons.

I also recovered a tome from one of his heretic priests. It seems a perversion and mockery of the Imperial Guardsman’s Handbook. This was a standardized text held by his various unit leaders. Upon careful, and warded study of the text, I have determined that it is of unnatural origin. I captured a second text and upon brief, but accurate inspection, I determined it to be an exact copy. Therefore I burned and disposed of this text immediately. I have stored, locked and warded the first text I recovered and have delivered it to Erioch along with Elak Sarda. There are no threads or beacons in the warp to which this text could be traced, but I have warded it all the same.

This text, which I have carefully, but briefly studied, has been determined by me to be a facet of an original essence. It is more than a copy and not even necessarily a separate book entity. This tome connects in essence to an original, in which a dark power might extend it’s influence through a myriad of consistent facets. I believe this is the power that infects the Stigmartus forces with an all encompassing will. The cohesion of such a force, with all it’s chaotic influences, has always been a wonder to our Ordos. I believe this is a significant clue and insight into the method of the Enemy.

I await summons from the Iquisitorial Authorities here on Erioch to conclude this subject matter. I will also await further instructions from you, Hjalmar, and our Ordos’ superiors as to how they would like to proceed in such an investigation and eradication of the Heretic Elak Sarda.

Sincerely,

Nexus

Negotiations concluded

place-detail-map_jpg.png
We faced the remnants of the Stigmartus cultists and obliterated them. The final blow was hollow as Nexus alerted us to the foul heresy that was in process: a ritual to we-know-not what end… to avoid playing into the enemy’s hands we apprehended the leader and after much questioning and debate finally submitted him to the custody of Brother Epistolary Eustace and his black priests.
imagesMH280I3G.jpg
Meanwhile the feint was complete and four VIIIth traitorous scum legionnaires struck at the facility to destroy the Plenipotentiary and the negotiation process. Brother Ian did his duty valiantly: the Plenipotentiary lived to conclude the diplomatic process and two of the scum traitors were destroyed. The two others escaped to lick their wounds and likely report their failures to whomever might be their master..
Raptors.jpg
Inasmuch as we have maintained secrecy from other Imperial bodies it seems that these heretics and traitors knew of the site before our arrival or they could not have traveled there so quickly, particularly with the limited tech they were using.
After negotiations concluded and we parted ways with the xenos diplomatic force, we returned to the Towering Herald and enjoy a blessedly quiet journey back to the Watch Fortress.

The Divinations and Auguries of Agent Nexus
Can't you look into the future? -- It doesn't work like that.

Augury on the Towering Herald Light Cruiser, before warp translation to Seraph III

Subject: LiVii

Question: “What challenges to our mission do we face in regards to Team Occulus?”

- A vision of a swamp full of indistinguishable corpses with Brother LiVii in the midst. There are tracer lines of a light, ethereal quality leading to impressions and images of team members, afar. A shadow descends on a nearby clearing as team Occulus advances forward with a line of black fog billowing behind them. A swarm of bats burst upwards from the swamp and surround LiVii.

- Team Occulus is indicated as a hindrance along with the black fog following them. The bats are LiVii’s doom…but the trace lines to his team are his greatest advantage.

- “The black rain will foretell the arrival of the enemy”

Augury on the Towering Herald Light Cruiser, before warp translation to Seraph III

Subject: Ian Kaldaros

Failed.

Augury on the Eternal Vigilance Friggit, before warp jump

Subject: Althea Nexus

Question: “What dangers will be faced on the long warp journey to the Iron Collar?”

- A great obstacle will be cloaked figures meeting. Covert operations….

- There is a vision of a flaming “I” symbol. A likeness to the symbol of the Inquisition. There is also a general feeling and concept translated as “An impatience to act”.

- A boon and advantage revealed is the image of a black clad Space Marine Librarian with a black shield sigil.

Augury on the Eternal Vigilance Friggit, before warp jump

Subject: Captain of the Eternal Vigilance, Red Hunter Chapter

Question: “What is the fate of my ship on this journey?”

- A foreboding feeling regarding the ship’s fate involves the image of an Imperial Commander with a retinue of all black clad soldiers.

- Challenges to the ship’s void travel later in the journey brings up an image of a Tao Commander with Crisis suits and Fire Caste warriors. Brevi and Gabriel also appeared as challenges to the journey.

- A boon and advantage to this ship brought up the image of an older man, finely attired and of great stature. He has a finely trimmed mustache and beard and is pouring over dataslates.

Augury on Baraband, in the dark field

Subject: Ian Kaldaros

Question: “What challenges will we face ahead on this mission?”

- An image of a Tao Commander sitting across a chessboard from Ian Kaldaros. A matching of movements.

- A sequence of a group of Tao guards fighting in retreat from a group of frenzied Kroot. They were protecting an Ethereal who was transporting a cut slab from one of the black arches.

- “Trust yourself to know when a friend is an enemy and an enemy is a friend.”

Negotiations with the Xenos

Astartes_and_Tau.jpg

We have been assigned to be the body guard of Imperial Diplomat Erwin Sire for our mission upon Seraph 131. It is distasteful to embark upon such a mission but it is our duty to ensure such an en endeavor is successful. It has been suggested that there will be elements that will attempt to prevent such successful negotiations. My suspicion is that who ever is against this it will not be the Tau. The Tau need all the time they can gain from these negotiations. Their race is doomed lest they find some ultimate weapon that can prevent their destruction. A cease fire is the only way to stall the hammer of the Imperium so breaking a delicate truce would be detrimental to their so called “greater good”. It is more likely the Stigmartus will attempt to reign chaos upon these proceedings.

Day four of the negotiations have begun. During a break between the two parties it would seem that Brother Brevy and Brother Gabriel have incited some insult according to the pict footage provided by brother Hecaton. In response I have been held accountable, as is protocol, for their actions and must engage in a duel with the Tau commander. While the contest itself will be a small matter I am vexed at the question it draws. There is quite simply no comparison that can be drawn between the skills and talents of an Astartes to that of a Tau warrior of any stripe. This contest brings forth that irrefutable fact to question. It reinforces the enemy committed to their agenda. It shows that an Astartes can be challenged on the field, and belies valuable information in regards to what we are capable of.

We are not here to show the enemy what we are capable of. We are here to see that negotiations are conducted peacefully. And while thankfully no repercussions have been felt by the actions of my brothers at this point we have failed on a more fundamental level. I will see to it that we report to Chaplain Drakaus upon arrival at Erioch.

I shall make available upon request the information spanning the entry above and below as I found it more prudent to bring attention to a rather troubling report.
Terminated_Nightlord.jpg

Upon providing support to Brother Hestus, Brother LiiVi and Gabriel became engaged with, and terminated, one of the faithless traitor extemis. According to the report the traitor attacked Brother LiiVi from behind thinking him to be an easy target. Honored Gabriel immediately engaged while Brother LiiVi used his exceptional training to target the traitor when the opportunity arose. According to their report Brother Garbriel gave chase to the fleeing cowardinto the woods where he used his superior skill, grace, and his faith in the Emperor to remove the coward’s arm and run him through from behind. A fitting end to such filth. Let this be a reminder to all who would stand against the justice of the Emperor.

While this cowards death is to be celebrated it is quite vexing as well. The placement of a single Astartes, even one who has fallen so low, in the ranks of the enemy does not make sense. If there were to be only one then he would likely be some form of warlord and hence have the finest troops with him. We already know the Stigmarta forces are well armed and organized so to leave a high ranking asset such as an Astartes alone is contrary to reason. It is more likely that this asset was working along side others or sent as a lone agent to see a single task completed. What could that task be, where are the others and how many of them are there are the questions that now concern me.

Unfortunately the negotiations are to continue for another 2 days and until this is done I am whole preoccupied with the defense of this council. It has been reported that an attack is inbound by Brother Hecaton and Agent Nexus. I must make ready the defenses for this facility.

As I expected the the Stigmarta forces were involved with the Traitor legions of the Night Lords. Movement was detected north of our position at the presumed abandoned Stigmarta camp and thus Honored Brother Gabriel and Apothecary Brevy advanced upon their position. The recon mission turned to a full out assault and back up was required. I chose to relocate Agent Nexus, Bacunawa squad, and Brother Hecaton.

During this battle the Night Lords took the opportunity to attack my position in hopes of destroying the negotiations. I requested the aid of Brother Epistolary Eustice and with his help was able to fully engage allowing me to destroy two of the Night Lords. I must commend the actions of Brother Eustice and have quickly found that despite the Battle Brothers clouded past, I would be honored to fight along side this honored brother.

While the attack from the Night Lords that I engaged was viscous my knowledge in the Codex, faith in the Emperor, and duty to the Imperium held firm. I was able to remain calm and clear headed, using my cryo grenades to eliminate the 1st traitor that I had nearly ended with my opening salvo, and at the same time, weaken the other traitor. My Tark blood line allowed me to weather the cryogenic effects of the grenade and continue to battle the traitor. In the end, the coward attempted to kill The Plenipotentiary Designate while fleeing. I intercepted the traitor’s rounds with my body and exchanged them in kind, detonating his knee, hip, heart, and shoulder. His ruin found the rampart before exploding in a ball of fire.

After securing the site I incinerated the bodies and belongings of the traitors as is protocol. My company arrived shortly after with Elak Sarda captured after some insult to Brother Eustus’ honor. It will be noted that Agent Nexus has been both easier and more difficult to deal with on this mission. I will speak to her at a later time to temper this inconstancy and continue to build team unity.

Mission 3
training, embarkation, and decoyed.

40kfleet.jpg
M41 1265.35.
Team cohesion exercises at DW Fortress result in a deeper understanding and clarification of command structures and communication protocols within the kill-team.
Team designation change request submitted.
The kill team embarks on a mission to retrieve a magos from Seraph141.
Upon real space re-entry we are intercepted by high authority Inquisitional agents carrying the seal of approval of DW High Command. (based on the scrutiny our team gave the orders I am pleased to see that we are not too trusting, yet see the lack of familiarity with high command seals as a weakness that should quickly be expunged)
I conceal my disappointment that I will not earn a further boon with the followers of the machine god when it becomes apparent that the mission parameters were a decoy to ensure total secrecy in our REAL mission:
Safeguard a ranking diplomat during his mission to the Tau empire and support kill team Occulus (incl. Black shield Librarian Epistolary Eustace) in their hunt for renegades and heretics.
We are taking advantage of ample stores in this flotilla to rearm and equip for the new mission parameters.
